when everything else fails

Knights of Sand

monuments of sand for the fallen
their deeds for long the bards forgotten
fought in names of lands long gone
in a world where fences never stand alone

a wind to the north
flags sway on spires high
a wind to the south
rams rumble on creeping cranks
a wind to the east
lone ode to a mother’s sigh
a wind to the west
archers take aim on flanks

write them a ballad sing in a tavern
sing in the name of their valor
their pride of untainted honor
futile when the bard’s harp never sings
build them a monument erect in a square
for the gaze of legends never to die
forgotten when the craftman’s chisel never raps

a field of sorrow for nothing but tears to weep
a land of dead for nothing but fallen to haunt
a surge of rage for nothing but blood to seep
a swarm of ravens for nothing but soulless to taunt

monuments of sand for the fallen
their deeds for long the bards forgotten
fought in names of lands long gone
in a world where fences never stand alone

In Wars there is always this,
    the never-ending cries of battle,
the lost souls taken before their
    time, history repeated, raging,
    obliteration of the many, and
blood in the sands of all time.
